Yelverton Barn Conversion Windows & Doors
On the outskirts of Yelverton, just south-west of Dartmoor, one of our clients owns several barn outbuildings used as storage for their own property. With a long term vision of converting the buildings to maximise their potential as holiday lets, the first stage of the renovation was to install bespoke new flush casement windows and front doors.
Traditional style and natural beauty
Barn conversions have become increasingly popular over recent years. But the process of conversion can be a long one, with challenges–big and small–cropping up along the way.
Because these stone-built barns are of a certain age, one of the main challenges was getting precise measurements. With each individual door and window being custom made and handcrafted for each opening, accuracy is crucial in ensuring a correct fit.
Having made and installed a set of timber-framed double doors to one of the barns on a previous project, fortunately, we were familiar with the quirks and limitations of the buildings. To create a consistent tone and style across each barn, our designs specified European oak timber, which was sympathetic to their surroundings.
Without any specific building restrictions, the client was free to choose a bespoke colour spray for the door and frame finishes. Instead, it was decided we use a protective clear oil – perfect for enhancing the natural beauty of the wood and in keeping with the existing doors.

Custom glazing
Each flush casement window has double-glazing for thermal efficiency, hand-fitted by us as part of our manufacturing process. And, as we have the skill and craftsmanship to fully customise any window to exact specifications, the client opted for a Solar Gold coating on larger windows.
This external finish adds additional style with increased privacy while reducing incoming heat and glare, especially on south-facing windows. The client was also hands-on in choosing a rustic-style of ironmongery for the doors and internal window fittings–consistent with the aesthetics of each building–together with robust security locks.

Rustic authenticity
The final part of our process was the complete installation of each window and door. Once fitted, the wooden flush windows and doors now give each barn the modern practicality, efficiency, and security they require with the traditional and rustic authenticity they deserve.
